Description
Bold crosses and minimalist colors are inspired by the influence of 19th century Spanish missionaries on Southwest weaving. Reverses from grey background to ivory for two dramatically different looks. Matching sham available.
San Miguel takes inspiration from nineteenth-century Native American weaving traditions. Shortly after 1860, the traditional banded chief stripe evolved into the Navajo ‘third phase’ pattern. Geometric patterns expanded and merged into a ‘nine-element’ layout, often with a diamond as the recurring motif. Missionary crosses were popular at the time, as were red dyes and red bayeta—a finely spun yarn brought from Mexico by the Spanish and traded with Navajo weavers.
